Europe: Explosion Rocks Waste Plant at Port of Antwerp

A tank at an industrial waste management plant exploded at the port of Antwerp in northern Belgium on Friday, with authorities telling nearby residents to shut their doors and windows as a dark cloud of smoke billowed hundreds of feet into the air.

The blast occurred at about 15:45 local time in a tank containing solvents at the Indaver waste management facility in the Stabroek area of Antwerp and was followed by a fire.

Initial firefighting efforts focussed on the blaze and cooling nearby tanks. Authorities later confirmed the the fire had been brought under control and no longer posed a significant threat.

There were no injuries in the blast or fighting the fire.

Air monitoring showed no dangerous concentrations of pollutants, allowing authorities to lift its preventative measures to nearby residents.
